About the prototype: The Deutsche Reichsbahn wanted to standardize operation on branch lines at an early stage and therefore commissioned the development of a light combustion railcar from VEB Waggonbau Bautzen. In 1957, the first model was ready for testing. In 1959, a second prototype was delivered which, unlike the first model, contained a drive unit from GDR production. The second series, produced in 1965, contained not only a railcar but also a control car, which considerably shortened the turnaround times. The third and final series with 73 motor coaches and 72 driving trailers was produced from 1968 onwards by VEB Waggonbau Görlitz. When Deutsche Bahn AG was founded on January 1, 1992, the Deutsche Bundesbahn numbering plan had to be adopted and the railcars were now designated as the 771 and 772 series and the driving trailers as the 971 and 972 series. As the Deutsche Bundesbahn did not have sufficient capacity to dispense with the railcars, they underwent a thorough modernization. This included new underfloor engines from MAN and new gearboxes, as well as a complete overhaul of the interior. In 2004, the last active railcar was taken out of service in Stendal. 22 of the railcars were sold to Cuba and 16 to Romania. Individual units were also sold to Spain and Brazil, although these will probably not be operational for a long time due to the lack of spare parts.

About the model: Kres is now dedicating a model to this well-traveled railcar, which has served for almost 50 years on the German rail network alone. This corresponds to the condition of the cars after modernization and also has the paint and lettering from Era V. The exterior features and characteristics of the carriages are excellently reproduced and the detailed interior can be highlighted by the interior lighting. All lighting functions, whether inside or outside, are implemented with LEDs, which means that a true-to-original light color can be produced and maintenance work is minimized at the same time. A modern bell-type armature motor characterizes the driving characteristics of the model with its high performance and smooth running.
