Brands for every model railway project

Model Railway Manufacturers by Specialisation

Discover important model railway brands according to their particular strengths rather than scale: rolling stock and complete systems, digital control, buildings, scenery, road vehicles or specialist technical accessories.

Choose the project first, then the brand

Which model railway manufacturer is right for my project?

Not every model railway brand has the same focus. Some manufacturers provide complete product ecosystems consisting of rolling stock, track and digital control. Others specialise in exceptionally detailed locomotives, international passenger trains, garden railways or narrow-gauge prototypes.

Different brands become important when constructing a layout. Faller, Auhagen, Kibri, Vollmer and Pola shape buildings and architecture. NOCH, Heki and Busch supply materials for terrain, vegetation and scene design. Preiser, Herpa, Brekina and Rietze bring the completed miniature world to life with figures and road vehicles.

This overview assigns each manufacturer to its most characteristic field of use. Many brands can, of course, fulfil several different roles. The classification is therefore not intended to limit your choice, but to provide the quickest route into the relevant product range.

Frequently asked questions about model railway manufacturers

Which manufacturer offers the most complete model railway system?

Märklin, Roco, PIKO and Tillig combine rolling stock with track, starter sets or system accessories. The best system depends on your existing rolling stock, control equipment and desired expansion options.

Which brands are known for particularly detailed rolling stock?

Brawa, ACME and Bemo are particularly suitable for modellers who value fine printing, prototypical fittings and individual vehicle variations.

Which manufacturers are particularly important for digital model railways?

ESU, Uhlenbrock, ZIMO, Lenz, Massoth, YaMoRC and tams elektronik offer decoders, command stations, feedback, sound or accessory modules. Viessmann adds signals, catenary and animated technology.

Which brand is suitable for buildings and town scenes?

Faller offers a particularly broad building range and the Car System. Auhagen is notable for modular systems and textured sheets. Kibri focuses on industry, bridges and vehicle kits, while Vollmer and Pola add distinctive buildings.

Which manufacturers do I need for realistic scenery?

NOCH covers almost the entire field of terrain construction. Heki is particularly strong in trees and vegetation. Busch combines scenery, agriculture and vehicles. Preiser adds believable everyday scenes with its figures.

Can products from different manufacturers be combined?

Buildings, scenery materials and figures can usually be mixed without difficulty. With rolling stock, track, decoders and digital technology, however, the power system, interface, protocol and technical compatibility must be checked.

Why is each manufacturer assigned to only one specialisation?

Many brands offer products in several fields. The classification therefore deliberately shows each brand’s most typical strength and is intended to simplify navigation. The complete range is available on the respective manufacturer page.

Which manufacturer is suitable for road vehicles?

Herpa offers many modern cars and trucks. Brekina concentrates strongly on historic vehicles and buses. Rietze is particularly interesting for service buses, fire engines and rescue vehicles.

Which manufacturers offer specialist technical accessories?

Seuthe specialises in smoke and steam generators, Sommerfeldt offers catenary systems and pantographs, and Lux Modellbau provides track vacuums, grinding wagons and other layout-cleaning systems.
