The class 1000 electric locomotives of the Dutch State Railways (NS) are among the most interesting developments in the field of European locomotive construction in the post-war period. Their technical concept is based on the proven design of the SBB Ae 4/6 from Switzerland. In contrast to the Swiss design, however, the class 1000 locomotives were developed for use in the Dutch direct current network. This adaptation was necessary in order to optimally integrate them into the existing NS infrastructure.

Operational use and museum preservation

Although originally intended for express train service between the major Dutch cities, it became apparent over time that the locomotives were particularly suitable for freight train service. Between 1948 and 1982, they were therefore mainly used for freight services. Of the total of ten locomotives produced, only the 1010 is still in existence today. It can be viewed in the Dutch Railway Museum in Utrecht and is considered an important technical testimony to Dutch railroad history.

Shape variant with digital switching option

The PIKO 97504 is a detailed model that authentically reproduces the characteristic features of the Dutch Rh 1000. The model has an NEM 658 PluX22 digital interface and is designed for direct current operation. The cab and engine room lighting can be controlled digitally after the installation of an appropriate decoder. This allows the locomotive to showcase technical details and at the same time make operation flexible.

Sophisticated mechanics and prototypical appearance

Equipped with two finely crafted metal scissor pantographs and a harmonious paint scheme with clean printing, the model is also visually impressive. With a length over buffers of 187 mm and a minimum radius of 358 mm, the locomotive is suitable for many layout sizes. The direction of travel-dependent light change in white and red and the option of retrofitting a PIKO sound decoder (item 56632) make the locomotive a flexible choice for demanding model railroaders.

Model for the Era IV direct current system

The PIKO 97504 is aimed at model railroaders aged 14 and over who value realistic details, digital expandability and a prototypical appearance. Thanks to the NEM shaft with close coupler link, the model can be easily integrated into existing vehicle formations. The locomotive therefore offers a good balance between appearance, functionality and expansion potential for DC operation.
