The prototype: The E 44 series
Almost 200 class E 44 locomotives were built between 1932 and 1954. These versatile machines proved themselves on main and branch lines and were considered to be extremely reliable. After the Second World War, many locomotives had to be handed over to the USSR as part of reparations. However, the GDR was able to buy back the majority of the machines in 1952 and refurbish them in the Dessau factory.
From 1961, the locomotives were equipped with modern RBS 58 scissor pantographs, which made operation more efficient. Locomotive 244 127 was stationed at Leipzig-Wahren depot and played an important role in the Central German network.
