Nine models · two locomotive families

Big diesels, small operational details

The ESU Autumn New Items 2026 bring together nine H0 diesel locomotives in this selection: six versions of the Class 132, 232 and 241 family and three models from the DR V100 family. Deutsche Reichsbahn, DB AG, MEG and EBS are represented. All nine articles are described as sound-equipped models for DC and AC layouts. Your choice therefore depends particularly on the railway operator, era and running number you want.

If you enjoy long trains and distinctive six-axle locomotives, start with the “Ludmilla”. For an operating scheme with a station, industrial siding and frequent shunting, take a closer look at Classes 110, 112 and 298. The product overview covers precisely the autumn selection presented here. You will find more ESU vehicles and digital products on our ESU brand page.

The models in pictures

From Reichsbahn to private freight operators

The running number makes the difference. Compare versions within a locomotive family, then choose the model that suits your rolling stock and layout theme.

132 380 and 132 543: two DR versions

Articles 31352 and 31353 offer a choice of two Class 132 locomotives in Era IV. Both carry Deutsche Reichsbahn markings. Their different running numbers are particularly appealing to collectors who want to operate several locomotives of the same class or add to an existing collection without duplicating a locomotive’s identity.

A main station with passenger and freight services is one possible setting for a Reichsbahn scene. Choose suitable DR coaches and wagons, checking their markings and period. A shared era helps narrow the selection, but does not by itself establish a particular historical train formation. If you are recreating a specific train, a prototype photograph from the chosen period is also useful.

ESU 31355 · 232 262

232 322 and 232 262: DB AG in two eras

Article 31354 represents DB AG locomotive 232 322 in Era V. Article 31355 takes you into Era VI with 232 262. This allows you to choose a different historical focus even within the same class. First decide whether your layout should portray railway operations in Era V or a more recent scene.

This decision helps when assembling your rolling stock: markings, logos and overhaul dates should fit the chosen theme. The two locomotives also offer a way to build a collection around different stages of development. Compare the models using their complete running numbers. The search below accepts both the ESU article number and the locomotive number, taking you straight to the matching card.

ESU 31357 · 241 353

MEG 315 and EBS 241 353: distinctive alternatives

The two private-operator versions extend the Era VI selection: 31356 represents MEG locomotive 315, while 31357 depicts EBS locomotive 241 353. They offer a different theme from a collection devoted entirely to DB or DR. A layout area with a goods yard, industrial railway and varied train duties provides particular scope for an individual operating concept.

You could make either locomotive the starting point for a freight transport theme. Decide what load your train should carry first, then choose suitable wagons. Uniform wagon types create a different impression from a mixed goods train. This suggestion describes an operating concept; if you want to reproduce the prototype accurately, verify the particular locomotive’s actual duties separately.

ESU 31767 H0 Diesel Locomotive 112 268 Old Red, DR, Era IV, DC+AC Sound
ESU 31767 · 112 268 old red

110 300 and 112 268: the DR V100 family

The old-red 110 300 under article number 31765 and the equally old-red 112 268 under article number 31767 both represent Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era IV. Their similar basic shape makes a direct comparison appealing. Check the exact class designation and running number when adding either version to an existing collection.

For this locomotive family, ESU describes features including digitally operated couplings, motor-driven fans and a smoke generator synchronised with the sound. This puts the focus on time spent at the station as well as running. A manageable shunting task with a few wagons can provide just as much activity on a model railway as a long circuit. Refer to the instructions for the individual model for its exact operation.

ESU 31766 H0 Diesel Locomotive 298 051 Traffic Red, DB AG, Era V, DC+AC Sound
ESU 31766 · 298 051 traffic red

298 051: traffic red in Era V

Article 31766 adds the traffic-red 298 051 of DB AG to the V100 family. Compared with the two old-red DR versions, this model provides a different period and visual focus. It is the version to choose from this selection if you are specifically looking for Class 298 in Era V.

For an operating session, you could plan a small interchange station: receive wagons, sort them by destination track, deliver them to an industrial siding and collect them again later. Easily accessible tracks and sufficient free length for running round are essential. Choose the locomotive to suit your prototype theme, then match the number of wagons to the usable track lengths on your layout.

The technology behind the new “Ludmilla”

ESU describes the new version of the Class 132 family as extensively redesigned in its drive and functions. Features include a coreless motor, genuinely rotating fans, a revised sound system and a newly designed smoke generator. On this version, switching between two-rail and centre-rail operation uses a slide switch in the fuel tank area in combination with the plug-in pickup shoe.

These functions also make the class interesting for modellers who enjoy observing a locomotive at a standstill and at low speed. Check the relevant function overview before the first run. This helps you explore lighting, sound and other effects individually instead of changing several functions at once. Each direct product link leads to the relevant version with its own article number.

Bringing layout and model together

Which version suits your operations?

ESU 31765 H0 Diesel Locomotive 110 300 Old Red, DR, Era IV, DC+AC Sound
ESU 31765 · 110 300 old red

Start with your layout theme

Before choosing, note three things: your preferred era, railway operator and the locomotive’s task. Should it haul a train along the main line, shunt wagons at a station or represent a particular running number in a collection? These criteria help narrow the choice more quickly than colour alone. The filters combine locomotive family, era and railway operator.

All nine featured models are H0 gauge. This particular list therefore does not mix H0, TT and N. Even on an existing layout, you still need to check the track system. A shared gauge does not establish how a model collects power or how its digital functions are controlled.

Check DC and AC operation on the specific model

The designation DC+AC Sound identifies the sound-equipped versions offered here for DC and AC layouts. It does not mean that a model can run on both track systems without the correct setup. Follow the information about the plug-in pickup shoe and switching in the ESU instructions. Configure the locomotive for your own layout before its first use.

Explore digital functions step by step

First check that the locomotive responds to commands from your control unit. Then check direction of travel and lighting, followed by sound and other functions. Keeping a short list of frequently used function keys makes later operation easier. For an introduction to decoder terminology, see our Decoder guide.

Change one setting at a time

If a function behaves differently from what you expect, first compare the function assignments for the exact article number with the controls you are using. Record the original settings before changing them. This makes it easier to track which change produced which effect. Refer to the model’s instructions for filling and operating its smoke generator as well.

1. Space and track lengths

Plan the locomotive and rolling stock together. Measure the usable length between the points where the train should actually stop. A long formation looks different on the open line than on a short station track. Also check the specified minimum radius of the particular model, tight crossovers and clearances alongside the track.

2. Choose a consistent period

DR models in Era IV, DB AG models in Era V and vehicles in Era VI create different layout scenes. Rolling stock markings and running numbers help identify the right period. Our overview of model railway eras provides an introduction. For a particular date, the individual vehicle still needs to be considered.

3. Plan a small operating session

For example, start with three wagons and two destination tracks. One wagon stays at the station, another goes to the industrial siding and the third is due for collection. This creates purposeful movements without overcrowding the layout. Expand the session once the shunting routes, couplings and track lengths suit your operating plan.

4. Record the correct article

Save the five-digit ESU article number and complete EAN alongside your chosen model. The running number alone is often less practical for an unambiguous order, as similar prototypes may appear in several versions. The product display therefore shows only gauge, article number, EAN and power system alongside the name.

Frequently asked questions about the ESU autumn selection

Which nine articles are included on this page?

The selection includes ESU articles 31352, 31353, 31354, 31355, 31356 and 31357, plus 31765, 31766 and 31767. The first six models represent the Class 132, 232 and 241 family. The other three belong to the DR V100 family. This is the selection covered by this page, not a complete list of all ESU products.

Which models represent Deutsche Reichsbahn?

The DR versions in this list are 132 380 and 132 543, plus 110 300 and 112 268. All four are assigned to Era IV. Select “DR” in the filter to see them together. Then compare the locomotive family and running number with your layout theme and existing vehicles.

Can I search by EAN?

Yes. The search includes the complete EANs of all nine models. An ESU article number such as 31352 or an internal shop number such as MBS196593 also finds the corresponding model. For example, EAN 4044645313527 belongs to article 31352. Additional filters remain active and may narrow the results further.

Are DC and AC versions separate articles?

Each of the nine articles listed here is described as a DC+AC Sound version. The cards therefore show “Direct current (DC) / Alternating current (AC)”. Check the correct setup for your track system in the ESU instructions. This label does not replace configuring the model or checking compatibility with your digital control unit.

Why does the product card have no description excerpt?

The cards are designed for quick comparison. Only the name, gauge, article number, EAN and power system appear beneath the image. Differences and operating ideas are explained in the illustrated sections above. Click the image or card to open the complete product page for that model.

How are product details refreshed?

When you reach the product search on modellbahnshop.de, the page checks the nine corresponding product pages and retrieves suitable updated English names and large images. Existing English names are retained if the shop data is still in German. You can also start this check with the refresh button. If a request fails, the existing details remain available. Search and filters already cover all nine included articles before the refresh.
