Märklin Track Construction at 1:87 Scale

Which products belong to the Märklin H0 track-set range?

H0 gauge is produced at a scale of 1:87 and uses a model track gauge of 16.5 millimetres for standard-gauge vehicles. Märklin combines this distance between the rails with a stud-contact centre conductor. A pickup shoe beneath the locomotive collects traction current from the studs, while the two outer rails form the common return conductor.

A Märklin track set combines coordinated track for a clearly defined purpose. Short straights close gaps, extension packs create additional running routes and Digital Set 24802 adds two turnouts which are already motorised and digitally switchable. Pack 29000 combines a C-Track oval with a Mobile Station 2, track box and power supply.

A second major group consists of the track packages for NOCH Easy-Track. The complete track combination is already matched to the respective route plan. Each of the four projects is available as a robust C-Track version and as a K-Track version which can be ballasted individually.

Vehicles, buildings, scenery material and the Easy-Track route kit itself are included only when they are expressly listed on the relevant product page. The eight Easy-Track packages primarily contain the Märklin track components required for each plan.

System information: The same track gauge does not automatically mean the same electrical system. Märklin C-Track and K-Track belong to the centre-conductor system. Most H0 two-rail track uses two electrically isolated outer rails without stud contacts.

Two Current Märklin H0 Track Systems

What is the difference between Märklin C-Track and K-Track?

Both systems are designed for Märklin H0 vehicles with centre pickup shoes. The principal differences concern the roadbed, connection, geometry and method of creating a permanent layout.

C-Track with Integrated Roadbed

Track, sleepers and moulded ballast base form a stable unit. The click connection supports quick and accurately aligned assembly and is also suitable for track plans which are changed regularly.

K-Track Without a Ballast Base

The slender track is laid on a separately selected substructure. Roadbed, ballast colour and the surrounding scenery can be customised completely. The 900-millimetre flexible track permits individual curves.

Transition Between the Two Systems

The 180-millimetre 24922 transition track connects C-Track and K-Track. The transition should be straight, level and easily accessible. A location immediately after a tight curve is unsuitable.

Product Group 1

Six Märklin C-Track, Extension and Digital Sets

These packs solve specific tasks: compensating for track lengths, constructing a continuous circuit, adding curved turnouts, creating a shunting group or controlling turnouts digitally.

Product Group 3

Four Märklin K-Track Packages for NOCH Easy-Track

The K-Track versions follow the same route shapes but use independent geometry without an integrated ballast base. Visible routes, stations and embankments can therefore be supported, ballasted and weathered individually.

The track package and route-construction kit are separate products. The Märklin set provides the track for the respective plan. The precut routes, pillars and assembly plans are supplied in the matching NOCH Easy-Track kit.

The Most Important Märklin Track Components

Straights, Radii, Turnouts and Digital Technology Explained

Individual tracks , turnouts and track accessories permit later modification of the preconfigured sets.

C-Track 24188 and 24172
Basic System Straights

24188 measures 188.3 millimetres and 24172 measures 171.7 millimetres. Both lengths are frequently combined to compensate for turnout connections and parallel tracks.

C-Track 24094 and 24077
Fine Length Compensation

The short straights measuring 94.2 and 77.5 millimetres close small gaps. Set 20099 combines these two important compensation lengths.

Radii R1 and R2
Compact and Regular Continuous Circuits

C-Track R1 has a radius of 360 millimetres and R2 has a radius of 437.5 millimetres. The minimum radius of every intended vehicle must be checked before constructing the layout.

Standard Turnouts 24611 and 24612
Station and Passing Track

The left- and right-hand C-Track turnouts are 188.3 millimetres long. They can be operated manually and fitted with a drive, decoder and turnout lantern.

Curved Turnouts 24671 and 24672
Branching Within the Curve

The inner curve follows R1. Curved turnouts save layout length and begin a parallel route or station within a curved alignment.

Double-Slip Turnout 24620
Four Routes in One Compact Component

The double slip combines a crossing with two turnout functions. It is especially suitable for station approaches and compact shunting groups.

K-Track Flexible Track 2205
Individual Curves and Transitions

The 900-millimetre flexible track is cut to the required length. It permits flowing routes, individual radii and long sections with few rail joints.

Mobile Station, Decoders and Power Feeds
Digital Driving and Switching

The Mobile Station controls locomotives and electromagnetic accessories. Turnout decoders receive switching commands, while additional power feeds support even power distribution on larger layouts.

When ballasting K-Track, the stud contacts, turnout blades and operating mechanisms must remain unobstructed. Suitable substructures and materials are available under Track Bedding and Ballast .

From the Available Space to a Suitable Set

How to Select a Märklin H0 Track Set

A suitable set considers more than external dimensions. Train lengths, radii, reach, control equipment and the intended operating sequence are equally important.

Measure the Base Area Precisely

Include operating aisles, cable access, the layout edge and access to concealed track in addition to the plan itself.

Select C-Track or K-Track

C-Track supports quick assembly, while K-Track provides more freedom over the roadbed, ballast and visible alignment.

Check Vehicles and Radii

The minimum radius stated for the model determines whether R1 can be used or whether larger radii are necessary.

Compare Usable Track Lengths

Stations, sidings and hidden yards must accommodate the longest planned trains completely.

Prepare the Digital Technology

Define the track box, command station, turnout decoders, feedback and additional power feeds before constructing the scenery.

Carry Out Test Operation

Lay the track loosely first and test long coaches, pickup shoes, turnouts and gradient transitions in both directions.

Begin Digitally

Märklin 29000 combines an R2 oval, Mobile Station 2 and power supply.

Digitise Turnouts

Märklin 24802 provides two turnouts which are already motorised and digitally equipped.

Shunting and Storage

Märklin 24905 C5 forms a larger group of turnouts and buffer-stop tracks.

Compact Complete Layout

Theisensee uses a minimum base area of approximately 125 × 105 centimetres.

Scale, Track Gauge and Electrical System

Distinguishing H0 Centre-Conductor and Related Model Gauges

The 14 listed sets belong to the standard-gauge Märklin H0 system. Other H0 narrow-gauge systems use the same scale but a different distance between the rails.

System Scale Model Track Gauge Classification
Märklin H0 Centre-Conductor 1:87 16.5 mm Direct application of the C-Track and K-Track sets
H0 Two Rail 1:87 16.5 mm The same track gauge but without a stud-contact centre conductor
H0m 1:87 12 mm Metre gauge using an independent track system
H0e 1:87 9 mm Narrow gauge, for example for 750 mm prototypes
H0f 1:87 6.5 mm Field and industrial railways at H0 scale
Z Gauge 1:220 6.5 mm Märklin's smaller standard-gauge system; not compatible with H0

The H0 AC or H0 DC guide and the model railway gauge comparison explain track gauge, scale and electrical systems.
