Are you looking for a reliable solution for turnarounds on your digital model railroad layout? The Tams Elektronik 49-01137-01 KSM-3 turnaround module is a ready-to-use unit in an enclosure and was developed for use on digital layouts of all nominal sizes.
Turnback loops are among the typical challenges in digital model railroading, as track sections with different polarities can meet at the junctions. The KSM-3 detects the resulting voltage drop as soon as a short circuit is about to occur and reverses the polarity within the turnback loop within a few milliseconds.
Low-Short-Circuit Turnout Module for Digital Operation
The module does not operate completely short-circuit-free, but with minimal short-circuit risk. This allows the locomotive to pass over the junction smoothly, while effectively protecting the wheels, pantographs, and rails. The threshold value for the polarity change is individually adjusted to the respective track voltage via a trimmer potentiometer.
An integrated LED aids in the precise adjustment of the optimal threshold value. As soon as the setting is appropriate for the specific layout, the LED lights up, thereby facilitating correct commissioning.
Integrated Turnout Switching for Entry and Exit
A particular advantage of the KSM-3 is the additional output for connecting a double-coil-driven turnout. The turnout is switched automatically as soon as a locomotive reaches one of the two separation points. At the same time, the polarity change occurs within the turnaround loop.
The correct turnout position is permanently assigned to each of the two separation points. This ensures the process remains reliable, even if the turnout has been adjusted externally. For motorized turnouts, the AMW-1 motorized turnout adapter is also required.
Also suitable for turntables and advanced layout designs
The KSM-3 can also be useful when used with turntables. After the turntable has rotated, different polarities may arise at the junctions between the turntable and the connecting tracks. In this case, the turntable is connected in the same way as the inner section of a turnaround loop.

Procedure:
- Phase 1: Depending on the current turnout position, the locomotive enters the turnaround loop via the left or right track
- Phase 2: Upon entering the turnaround loop, the polarity within the loop is reversed—if necessary—when the locomotive reaches the crossover point after the turnout
- Phase 3: When exiting the turnaround loop, the polarity within the loop is reversed upon reaching the break point before the turnout, and at the same time, the turnout is set correctly for the train’s exit
Notes on Layout Planning:
- The inner section of the turnaround loop between the two separation points must be at least as long as the longest train intended to pass through the turnaround loop
- The circuit also functions when multiple trains are inside the turnaround loop at the same time
- This requires that the two separation points are not crossed simultaneously
- Branching tracks within the turnaround loop are possible
- The maximum current for all vehicles within the turnaround loop is 8 A
- This includes the locomotive’s motor current, car interior lighting, and other electrical loads
- The turnaround loop can be extended with a hidden station or storage tracks
