From what age is a model railway suitable?
Age alone is not the deciding factor. Fine motor skills, patience, interest, available space and adult support determine which railway will provide lasting enjoyment.
Play railway, children's starter set or classic model railway?
Robust play systems with easily connected plastic track, simplified controls and magnetic couplings are suitable for younger children. These railways focus on active play, loading and storytelling. Technically, they differ from a permanently powered model railway layout.
From primary-school age, genuine H0 track systems become interesting. Märklin Start up uses Märklin C Track and introduces digital centre-conductor operation. PIKO kids uses the two-rail DC system with PIKO A-Track and a conventional speed controller. Both routes can later be extended with track, vehicles and accessories belonging to the same system.
Older children can also explore TT, N, narrow gauge or larger model sizes together with adults. However, not every model railway product is classified as a children's toy. The age label, warnings and instructions supplied with the individual product always take priority.

Which model railway gauge is suitable for children?
H0 is the most balanced introduction for many families. Smaller gauges save space but require finer handling. Larger gauges are easy to see but need more room and may involve heavier vehicles.

Play, build and expand safely
Six steps to a family-friendly model railway
A clear assembly area and consistent rules protect children, vehicles and furnishings. Responsibility for mains connections, rechargeable batteries and tools remains with adults.
Check the age information together
Compare warnings, swallowable small parts, magnets and the intended form of control before unpacking.
Choose a clean surface
Smooth tables and boards provide better protection against dust, carpet fibres, liquids and lost small parts.
Prevent falls
Do not place track directly beside an edge. Curves and faster sections need an additional safety margin.
Supervise power and batteries
Adults connect power supplies, charge rechargeable batteries and replace batteries according to the relevant instructions.
Remove damaged parts immediately
Defective cables, loose housings, broken magnets or loose small parts must no longer be used.
Use age-appropriate tools
Knives, soldering irons, adhesives and electrical work belong in the hands of experienced adults.

What is the difference between Märklin my world and Start up?
my world is a battery-powered play system with plastic track and magnetic couplings. Start up uses genuine Märklin H0 C Track and introduces digital centre-conductor operation.
Which gauge is best for children?
H0 usually provides the best compromise between size, stability and selection. TT and N save space but are smaller. G Gauge is easy to see but requires considerably more area.
Should a children's railway be analogue or digital?
Analogue control is easy to understand for one train. Digital control permits several independently controlled locomotives together with light and sound functions. Simple, age-appropriate operation is more important than the technology itself.
Can a model railway be assembled on a carpet?
A smooth, clean surface is better. Carpet fibres and hair can collect in axles and gearboxes. Also observe the assembly instructions for the individual play or track system.
Can Märklin and PIKO children's railways be combined?
Not as a general rule. Märklin Start up uses H0 centre conductor, while PIKO kids uses H0 two-rail. Track and powered vehicles are therefore not directly interchangeable.
Does a children's model railway require an app?
No. Handheld controllers and simple wireless controls are sufficient for the introduction. An app may become interesting later, but it should not make shared driving and play unnecessarily complicated.
