The command station must transmit the data formats supported by the existing decoders. Important formats include DCC, mfx, Motorola, M4 and, for some older vehicles, Selectrix.
A digital command station is the control and command centre of a digital model railway. It receives input from handheld controllers, a touchscreen, smartphone, tablet or computer and converts it into digital commands that are transmitted through the track to locomotive decoders. Turnouts, signals, lighting, turntables and other accessories can also be controlled.
The best digital command station is therefore not automatically the device with the largest display or the highest output current. What matters is whether the system suits the existing vehicle decoders, the model railway scale, the preferred operating method and planned expansions. A compact DCC command station is often sufficient for a small N-scale layout. A large H0 layout with many moving trains, feedback modules and computer control has very different requirements. For Gauge 1 and Gauge G, a suitable track voltage and considerably greater power reserves also become important.
Owners of Märklin H0 vehicles should pay particular attention to mfx, mfx+ and Motorola. On two-rail layouts in Z, N, TT, H0, H0e, H0m, 0 or 1, DCC is especially widespread. Anyone wishing to receive information from vehicle decoders should also check RailCom and the feedback technology supported by the selected system.

The output and adjustable track voltage must suit the selected scale. More current does not replace proper division into separate booster districts.
Available options include rotary controllers, wireless handheld controllers, touchscreens, apps, browser interfaces and computer programs for semi-automatic or fully automatic operation.
Feedback modules report occupied track sections and layout states. The command station, feedback bus and connected modules must be compatible.
A separate programming output makes it easier to read and modify decoder values without affecting other vehicles on the layout.
Check the availability of controllers, boosters, accessory decoders, feedback modules, Wi-Fi components and software connections before choosing a system.

Every system has its own priorities. One particularly important consideration is whether existing controllers, feedback modules and boosters should continue to be used.
The Central Station 3 is designed particularly for Märklin centre-conductor layouts. Compatible mfx locomotives register automatically. DCC and Motorola also make it possible to operate additional decoders. The Mobile Station offers a more compact entry point.

The Z21 combines DCC control, handheld controllers, smartphone apps, networking and feedback. It is suitable for manually operated layouts as well as later computer control. The precise features differ between the available Z21 versions.

The ECoS combines a large touchscreen, two speed controllers, multi-protocol operation and a powerful output stage. It is particularly useful when older Motorola or Selectrix vehicles are operated alongside DCC and M4 decoders.

Uhlenbrock offers several levels of control, from the compact DAISY II system to the Intellibox. One major focus is LocoNet, which can connect handheld controllers, feedback modules and other components throughout the layout.

Lenz focuses on a traditional, expandable DCC system. The LZV200 combines the command station and power amplifier. Handheld controllers and additional devices can be added through XpressNet, while starter sets provide a straightforward introduction.

The SmartControl system combines a convenient Wi-Fi controller with a compact DCC command station. A more powerful Gauge G version is available for garden railways and is designed for larger vehicles with higher current consumption.

YaMoRC is aimed at DCC users who wish to combine different network and bus standards. The YD7010 can be connected through LAN, Wi-Fi or USB and supports several commonly used control methods.

The digital signal is not tied to one particular scale. Current consumption, track voltage, available space and the number of trains operating at the same time can nevertheless differ considerably.
Small motors require comparatively little current. A suitable, preferably adjustable track voltage is more important than very high output power. Compact DCC command stations are sufficient for many layouts.

A straightforward command station with a handheld controller, programming functions and sufficient output is usually adequate for a small layout. Lenz Starter, PIKO SmartControl WLAN and Uhlenbrock DAISY II are typical beginner solutions. Make sure additional controllers, boosters and feedback modules can be added later.
Many command stations can be used across different scales. Track voltage, output current and the power supply must nevertheless suit the scale. Z and N require an appropriate voltage, while Gauge 1 and Gauge G frequently require more current or additional boosters.
DCC is a digital data protocol. Direct current or two-rail describes the track and power-collection system. A two-rail layout can be operated in analogue or digital form. DCC can also be used by suitable centre-conductor vehicles.
For a predominantly current Märklin vehicle fleet, the Central Station 3 is an obvious choice because it supports mfx and mfx+. The Mobile Station and Mobile Station WLAN offer more compact operating options. Other multi-protocol command stations may also be suitable when they support the required formats.
In many cases, yes. A DCC decoder can be operated with many DCC command stations. mfx, Motorola, feedback systems and proprietary system buses require closer examination. Electrical specifications, functions and programming options must also be considered.
A booster is required when the power demand exceeds the command station output or when the layout needs to be divided into several separate power and short-circuit districts. Transitions between the districts must be wired correctly.
No. DCC also works without RailCom. RailCom allows compatible decoders to return information through the track. The command station, decoder, detector and, where applicable, booster must support this function.
Yes. The Roco Z21, YaMoRC YD7010 and other networked command stations provide app or browser connections. Other systems require a router, access point or additional Wi-Fi module. A local Wi-Fi connection can operate without internet access.
Not necessarily. Many layouts can be controlled entirely through an app or touchscreen. A physical rotary controller is often more convenient during shunting because speed and direction can be changed without looking at a display.
Decoder addresses and other settings can be read or changed on the programming track without unintentionally programming other vehicles on the layout. The programming track must be electrically separated clearly from the normal operating area.
